The prodigal lad
When we look back at the last decade, there will be a list of unmissable names when trying to explain the rhythmic pulse of London’s underground scene: Jamie xx, Mount Kimbie, SBTRKT and of course Mura Masa are just some of the ones that have supplied the soundtrack for this decade of confusion, exploration and possibilities that were unimaginable just a few days ago. Who would have said that a young lad of 20-something like Alex Crossan, born on the Channel Islands, would feature the likes of A$AP Rocky, Charli XCX, Octavian and Damon Albarn on his tracks? The answer is simple: because in their undergroundness, in their dark beats, Mura Masa’s tracks are alive: they breathe, pulsate, they are coloristic, they have unexpected tenderness and are always ahead their time. Because maybe while we may think that this artist from Castel is committed to making music for his decade, he is in fact thinking about the next one.
